Verizon Becomes the Latest to Jump on the Secure Messaging and Email Service for Doctors and Hospitals With One More Choice

If you read here often enough there’s been plenty of talk about the imageuse of the Direct Interface to connect to the NIHN for secure messaging and it appears that Verizon has created one of their own and I am guessing this is outside the NIHN network since they have a lot of options.  Microsoft was one of the first with HealthVault to develop an interface for email between patients and doctors, basically anyone who set up a special email address.

Microsoft Delivers Encrypted E-mail Using Government “Direct Project” Security Protocols With HealthVault Personal Health Records

In addition EHR companies like e-ClinicalWorks announced their subscription service for any MD who has an EHR to communicate with any other doctor who has either theirs or another medical records system.

EClinicalWorks Launches “Join the Network”–Invests $10 Million Over the Next Year to Expand Peer to Peer Sharing Via NHIN Program for Users with eClinicalWorks and For Those Using Other EHRS

With the initial roll out of the Direct Project to connect to the NIHN network over 60 participants announced their participation, both medical record companies and Health HIT companies.  About a year ago there were a number of hospitals and doctors already using the NwHIN network for communicating and secure emails and also for use with government agencies.

Hospitals and Providers Using NHIN (Nationwide Health Information Network) To Connect and Share Medical Records With the VA and DOD And Even With Each Other

This looks like one more choice for doctors and hospitals and Verizon might have a no brainer platform to make it easy.  The NwHIN though can also bring in health exchanges as well as individual users, so here we go one more choice and who knows how many more might show up too.  BD

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ)
, the second-biggest U.S. telephone company, will introduce the first national service enabling doctors to securely exchange medical records no matter what computer system they use.

The service will begin tomorrow following testing among about a dozen U.S. hospital systems and other clients. Under the program, medical providers who pay a monthly fee will be able to share data, texts and e-mails while still meeting U.S. privacy standards. About $5 billion of Verizon’s $111 billion in revenue in 2011 came from health-related customers, said Peter Tippett, the New York-based company’s chief medical officer.

Physicians have traditionally avoided e-mail because of security concerns and data limits that often prevent them from sending large files such as X-Rays and MRIs, Tippett said. Verizon’s product, known as Secure Universal Message Services, overcomes those problems and is likely to attract “thousands” of medical providers, he said, declining to be more specific.

e-MDs Launches Cloud-Based EHR/Practice Management System

imageOk how many years ago did David Winn tell me they were working on a web based application?  It’s been a while and right now it’s not a web based but rather a “cloud” based system.  Yes there’s a difference in systems with being in the cloud as you all know today, which is all about hosting and spinning up a cloud.  So this is a perfect example of how new technologies change from the beginning to a final product.  It became a bit more complex to complete as it’s the times we live in.  In 4-5 years and I think I have that time frame correct, changes were made for the better due to newer and more efficiencies becoming available.

I know I keep mentioning time factors,  but it takes a lot of time and programming with development coding to get the product out and functioning well today.   This is all software as a service so no more client/server required unless you want one on premise.  There’s also the mobile version for the Ipad so this is good they did it all at once to have the full product out there.

In addition e-MDs now has their portal and you have to love the example clinic name here “Bleeding Edge”.  This of course is for patient physician communications for one and it can be customized for use.

imageIn addition to continue with tradition e-MDs maintains their specialty for their EHR that is designed to work with a variety of specialties.  They have had those for years before others even thought about this option.  In addition by state they have listed their IT partners who are well versed and trained with e-MDs for installations and other needs.  The company works with many federal REC centers across the country as well.  This is something I have not seen before and maybe it has been there but Roadshows coming across various metropolitan areas are scheduled too.  So this is a good show here, finally the next e-MDs solution, in the cloud accessible from anywhere.  BD

Cerner to Use Nuance Point of Care for Clinical Documentation Improvement–Items Needed to Get Paid Require Concise Terminology, Specificity and Then Some..

imageThe Nuance solution will work with both the Power Chart EHR and Revenue Cycle areas to help improve quality and accuracy of clinical notes in real time.  It appears that a query is run to scan the notes and advise of any areas to where further or different documentation could be applied.  With ICD10 on the roadmap this appears to be an effort to help bridge some of those documentation efforts.  There’s a few other similar software solutions along this line out there as well, and some are more specific to the ICD 10 area.  Doctors, gone are the days when you think you can prepare a medical note:)  It’s not the doctors but rather the complex society we have today with mapping and matching records to be concise in order to get paid.  The US is the only country that uses diagnosis codes tied to reimbursements thus so there’s less data and faster integration in other countries, one less set of big IT integrators.  BD

NEW ORLEANS --

Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) and Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ: CERN) today announced that Cerner will incorporate Nuance’s clinical documentation improvement (CDI) technology and professional services to help clinicians imageseamlessly create the most accurate and complete clinical documentation at the point of care. The integrity of clinical documentation is a critical component of a providers’ overall information management strategy and is directly tied to improved patient care, appropriate reimbursement, quality reporting and enhanced compliance.

As healthcare providers look to confront the drastic changes brought on by regulatory mandates such as ICD-10, value-based purchasing and various quality reporting initiatives, they’re increasingly realizing the vital role clinical documentation plays in their information management strategy and across various patient and business touch points in their organizations.

The integration of Nuance’s CDI solution within Cerner’s EHR and Revenue Cycle solutions will help healthcare providers improve the quality and accuracy of their clinical documentation in real-time at the point of care, supporting both clinicians’ and CDI specialists’ workflows. The technology will be used concurrently to give feedback to physicians on the information needed to complete the record and will provide CDI specialists with the tools necessary to improve their analysis of the physician’s documentation.

  • Cerner Care Management – Powered by Nuance’s proven J.A. Thomas CDI content and compliant documentation management program, this integrated solution will provide specialized content necessary for modeling a more specific working Diagnosis-Related Group resulting in a more efficient workflow and increased productivity for the clinical documentation specialist. This solution automates and supports the workflow of the CDI specialist within Cerner PowerChart®, the clinician’s view of Cerner’s EHR.
  • The Cerner Document Quality Review (DQR) Module – Powered by Nuance’s Computer-Assisted Physician Documentation (CAPD) solution, the DQR module facilitates complete, accurate and concurrent documentation by automating the CDI process. Physicians will interact with CDI clarifications and findings real-time at the point they are writing their notes. This will greatly improve both physician productivity as well as the integrity of their documentation and the discrete information captured within PowerChart, Cerner’s EHR.

EHR Vendors Announce Alliance to Enable Integrated HealthCare…Time To Write Some More Code…

This sounds like an extended version of the Common User Interface that has been around as open source for 5 years or betterimage and if it works and the code works then it should provide some real benefits.  Now who’s going to write the code?  Cerner is very well positioned since they have all their development in house versus one like Allscripts who has grown with acquiring software technologies but they now have a former Cerner executive at their CEO.   I last mentioned it in December of last year when the questions about EHR safety emerged as it is/was a platform that could sit on top of almost any medical records system and create some type of uniformity for doctors in being able to recognize a similar or same format where ever their travels took them.  The Common User Interface started back in 2007, so maybe ahead of it’s time a little?

Government Urges Software Companies to Find and Document Patient Harm Resulting From Electronic Medical Records–Checking Algorithms & Hey, Whatever Happened to the Common User Interface?

Since this was just announced details are sketchy as far as exactly where it will go but that is customary until all really dig in here.  A patient consent form is to be incorporated and again that is currently done via PHRs that allow for sharing data and this appears to be a contribution from the McKesson side since the url shows it on relayhealth.  RelayHealth from McKesson has been around for quite a while and is currently used to allow HIPAA compliant communications between patients and doctors and is shown as a proof of concept provider.  As complexities go today so goes the code and time to prepare for use.  BD

NEW ORLEANS — Top health care information technology (HIT) companies Cerner, McKesson, Allscripts, athenahealth, Greenway Medical Technologies® and RelayHealth announced today the launch of the CommonWell Health Alliance™, planned to be an independent not-for-profit organization that will support universal, trusted access to health care data through seamless interoperability.

This historic effort is aimed at improving the quality of care delivery while working to lower costs for care providers, patients and the industry as a whole.

The Alliance intends to be a collaborative effort of suppliers who are focused on achieving data liquidity between systems, in compliance with patient authorizations. The Alliance will define, promote and certify a national infrastructure with common platforms and policies. It also will ensure that HIT products displaying the Alliance seal are certified to work on the national infrastructure.

Olympia Medical Center In Los Angeles Reaches Agreement to License Patents From MMRGlobal

I believe Olympia Medical Center  is the first hospital to license and agree to the royalties from the PHR (personal health records) from MMRGlobal directly. There have been other agreements to imageinclude a recent claim with drug store chain Walgreens as well which stated last week they will need to take 30 days to review upon receipt of the complaint from MMRGlobal. Various entities in the healthcare business are in potential violation so agreements appear to vary a bit  whether it be a technology provider, a medical records system, drug store chain and so on.

MMRGlobal And Interbit Data Enter License Agreement To Sell MMR Patented PHR Technologies With MEDITECH EMR Systems As Relates To MyMedicalRecords.Com With Interbit Solutions

The detailed report references in the original press release can be read below as embedded.  WebMD also received a complaint and have not heard yet on their response but I’m sure as it develops more information will follow.  Also I met with Bob back when the patent complaints began and he explained to me in an interview a little bit more about how the patients were filed and when.  You can also search this web for additional information as there are several other updates I have posted as news becomes available.  BD

MMRGlobal Patent Portfolio, Bob Lorsch, CEO Answers Questions Relative to Patented Technologies

MMRGlobal Announces Another Hospital Patent License Agreement at HIMSS13

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- (MARKETWIRE) -- 03/04/13 -- MMRGlobal, Inc. (OTCQB: MMRF) today announced that through its wholly owned subsidiary, MyMedicalRecords, Inc., it has reached an agreement to license MMR's extensive health IT patent portfolio, which includes seven U.S. patents -- Nos. 8,301,466; 8,352,287; 8,352,288; 8,121,855; 8,117,646; 8,117,045; and 8,321,240 -- to Olympia Medical Center. T

he License Agreement also includes rights to additional pending applications and continuation applications, all of which involve inventions pertaining to Personal Health Records, imagePatient Portals and other Electronic Health Record systems. Olympia is a Los Angeles-based hospital with 204 beds, staffed by more than 600 physicians representing over 40 specialties, and known for its continuous program enhancement and excellence in service. With the latest license, the Company goes into its first day at HIMSS with royalty-based license agreements with EHR vendors, surgery centers, PHR vendors, Interbit Data, wellness providers, Burkhart Dental, and hospitals in addition to reseller relationships with healthcare professionals, associations, retailers and others as a direct result of MMR's patented IP embedded in its MyMedicalRecords Personal Health Record and MMRPro document management and imaging services for healthcare professionals. The Company is exhibiting at the HIMSS 2013 Annual Conference and Exhibition, in booth #3363.

As a result of heightened awareness of the MyMedicalRecords patent portfolio, the Company will be meeting with hospital administrators, providers, retail pharmacies, patient monitoring and telemedicine service providers and laboratories, as well as other software and equipment vendors in the healthcare and wellness markets. Without a license to the MMR patent portfolio, hospitals and providers could find themselves infringing on MMR's IP, since in order to fully qualify for incentives under the HITECH Act, Meaningful Use core requirements to provide patients access to their personal health information through a Web-based portal must be met.

Nurse Refuses to Give Senior Woman CPR As Heard on the 911 Call And The Patient Passed Away

This took place at a senior home in Bakersfield.  Listen to theimage 911 call and the nurse talking, “it’s against our policy” she says.  911 operator pleads for here to give CPR.  Listen to the doctor and his opinion and says it’s disgusting.  I guess we have given up being “human” to not violating policy.  Regardless of policies there’s state and federal obligations to follow.  They could be looking at losing their license.  She died at the hospital and the doctor stated “what should she have done? Something”.  The woman’s family did say she had lived there for 3 years and was not in good health but that’s most are there.  Again the ethics here are certainly poor and this reflect back on why I hate to see such ugly stuff in the press about folks that are obese or sedentary as will this “media conditioning” lead to occurrences like this?  Something to think about …as she wouldn’t even consider asking someone else to try.  BD

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — An elderly woman being cared for at a Bakersfield retirement facility died after a nurse at the facility refused to perform CPR on the woman after she collapsed, authorities said.

When the 87-year-old resident of Glenwood Gardens collapsed at the facility around 11 a.m. Tuesday, a staff member called 911 but refused to give the woman CPR, Bakersfield television station ABC23 (http://bit.ly/YQULm3 ) reported Friday.

An ambulance arrived several minutes after the call and took the woman to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. She has been identified as Lorraine Bayless, a resident of the home's independent facility, which is separate from the skilled and assisted nursing facility.
