Health Tech Hatch and Indiegogo Joining Forces for Crowd Funding in Healthcare

One of the reasons for the merger is to reach a larger audience.  We all know how difficult it is to raise money for certain areas in healthcare.  I just mentioned one last week and I like this one as it doesn’t sell your data and profiles like so many other consumer mobile health apps and devices. image Actually on some of those I do wonder from time to time as to how solvent they are, in other words could they stand alone and show a profit without the revenue they get from selling data?  That is one of the biggest deterrents today with consumers and health apps and devices in knowing that their data is sold and that companies make billions in profits doing it. Again, I’m all out for those like the Tricoder from Scanadu that are attempting to really provide a good product for consumers and drop the bottom feeding data selling, as more and more is getting use out of context just to make a buck, give a consumers a good product without selling them down the river and it might just catch on

Here’s a back post on some that use platforms with fuzzy privacy policies.  Theres’ even a community over there for the Blue Button Challenge.  I’m all for any apps that make it simple for both Vets and Medicare participants to get their medical data by all means.  Again I like those devices that can synch to a non tethered PHR to maintain all the information you choose to save and share versus the “other” model.  BD

Health Tech Hatch, a site launched last fall as a crowdfunding site specifically for health startups, is joining forces with one of the biggest crowdfunding platforms on the web, Indiegogo.

From the beginning, the company planned to help health startups both crowdfund and beta test their products with patients and physicians. But now, founder and CEO Patricia Salber said Health Tech Hatch plans to focus more closely on the beta testing side, while working on the crowdfunding piece through Indiegogo.

“We quickly learned that it’s really, really hard to raise much money if you’re trying to raise for a startup company [that isn't] any of the companies that have a cool device,” she said.

Startups like Misfit Wearables, which is developing a wearable activity tracker, and Scanadu, which recently set an Indiegogo record for its tricorder-like device, succeed in crowdfunding because they’re essentially offering a pre-sale through their campaigns, she said. But for startups focused on software, general crowdfunding can be tricky, because funders don’t get anything tangible for their contribution and they may want equity in return for their early support. Companies can raise from $5,000 to $20,000, but it’s often not worth the administrative effort and time they have to put in, Salber added.

Re-Identifying Medical Records All Depends on the Query Master and How Much Money Can Be Saved or Made With Adjusting Risk, Up or Down

I’m glad someone finally made a visual on this so consumers can get an idea of how the data mining processes work as it is complicated.  It’s all about imagequeries and that’s what business intelligence software does for the most part.  There have been articles out to where medical records are sold for research without having the Safe Harbor suggested data items removed.  These are items like phone numbers, social security numbers, names and so forth.  Public agencies are exempt from a lot of this so here might be one area of concern.

When selling or sharing confidential data, the information needs to be “worked” and prepared, more than just a simple check for data integrity and it takes some time to remove the data that can identify you so perhaps some are lazy and figure it will be done at the other end, some are bliss and don’t know, or some don’t want to spend the money on a proficient data base employee that knows how to do it…lots of reasons.  It’s not that hard to rematch data and of course it all depends on the sources of the data to find “common and unique” IDs to query upon.  Sometimes many queries need to be run to nail things down.  The list goes on and on with queries and this is a normal procedure done with writing software so any developer can tell you about the power of queries.  Listen to any quant, they re-match data all the time in the financial world and don’t blink an eye.  Data is data no matter what field one is in and the mechanics to re-match are pretty much the same.

There’s also the non HIPAA covered prescription data out there for sale and one insurer, United Healthcare has been cashing in big on selling this data for years and years.  It’s what they do, analytics and data, as evidenced by the AMA court case to where doctors and hospitals were short paid on out of network services for 15 years…all the about the context and profits of the queries that make decisions.  I said take the provisions of HIPAA out of the silo and reproduce them in various other areas as we have more entities in healthcare today than we used to, to put the rules out there and aggregate their presence.  We talk about “freeing up data” ,well let’s free up some laws and rules and create a better presence.  Heck even the IRS didn’t understand HIPAA it appears….but they do like mining you on social networks too…again what context are they using for justification is the big question…

Time to Take HIPAA Out of the Healthcare Silo–Needs to Be Integrated In Overall Privacy Laws Healthcare Information Is All Over The Place And Privacy Efforts Will Fail Without Real Algorithmic Levels of Regulation

The example produced here (below) by Bloomberg is a good visual to show how a query search can work and again unless someone wants your data they may not be taking time to find this out, but on the other hand they can if they want.  When settling a claim for example there’s nothing to stop an insurer from looking this up but of course it could not be legally used as documentation for denial so with seeing this, more queries to see if there’s another level to potentially deny a claim and the books are full of them.  Instead we get the “silly” digital illiterate stuff to read..sorry but that’s what most of it is…but the real intelligence of course is with insurers and in the financial markets with modelers (and some models that may lie) and the subsequent actions of the algorithms created based on a math  model to either reduce or increase risk.  You have to be careful on how some of this is used as profits with Algo Duping consumers and the government is very much alive and well

Lack of Modeling and Algorithm Sleuths and Stalkers In Government, Part of Why We See Such “Silly” HHS and Congressional News About Financial Donations And/Or Solicitations…

In the meantime we have other stories like this with insurers buying data from Master Card and Visa…ok so they have this data in house now and if the process used above has been successful in finding you and your data, well let’s jut query you now with this data and see if you buy junk food…I’m using that as an example due to some recent stories in the news.

Give this some thought though when someone tells you it was all public information available, which it could have been, but what did the Query Master do with it..all about context and making money or investigations of some sort.  In summary here we talk about transparency well, this is where it needs to be and all the data that has been opened up by HHS is nice and works well for journalists to analyze and create articles with informational input but does it immediately affect you?  Probably not but this does and I call some of this activity the Attack of the Killer Algorithms and started that series two years ago.  It is what it is and thus so we should be licensing those who share and sell data, and excise taxing those who sell it as they make billions upon billion with non tangible profits.  Works on severs 24/7 every day of the week.

Time Has Come to License and Tax the Data Sellers of the Web, Companies, Banks, Social Networks..Any One Making a Profit-Latest Microsoft/Google Privacy War Helping the Cause –Consumers Deserve to Know What Is Being Sold and To Who in a Searchable Format

Sad too that this epidemic of selling data actually distracts and takes away from R and D with manufacturing that creates jobs as everyone is so busy flipping a buck off an algorithm here that manufacturing loses out as more tend to focus here instead of on using technology to create more tangible products in the US and so the story goes. It’s all about context and watch the videos in the footer of this blog and maybe this message will be a little clearer and half of what you see out there with analytics will end up being a waste of money as the context will be marketed and warped for profit and thus we will end up losing value in the long run with some of what gets produced out there.  BD

Innovation Director at CMS Resigning, Innovation Requires Useful Context to Succeed And Be Viable, A Challenge in Today’s Complex World

He came from private industry and perhaps this is where he may return.  We have seen this before and another example was Steve Larsen with HHS, who now sits as a Vice President of United Healthcare.  He was accredited with writing a great deal of the healthcare reform law.

US Health Insurance Regulator Leaving to Take a Job at UnitedHealth Care As Vice President of the Optum Division – Moving to the “For Profit Side” With Business Intelligence Algorithm Dollars To Review

Innovation today certainly spurs analytics and some is good and some is well just there.  Innovation needs context to gain momentum and use and all of it may lack the proper context to where it really stands to be beneficial.  Innovations I think tends to be over used at times and we can innovate until our heads spin but until the context of where the products or computer code is useful, it kind of just sits there, in other words is it useful and where?  With the emergence of big data there are certainly some good opportunities out there to find information that has been buried but is all of is going to have earth shattering results?  Probably not so innovation needs context to be useful.

Big Data, Flawed Data, Business Intelligence, Where’s The Future and What Has Been Our Past…A World With ”Algo Duping” of Society and Consumers

In addition with all the complexities of Health IT today, innovation is getting a bit more complicated as well in some areas, a far cry from where it was 10 years ago or less.  So to be innovative today, it takes getting a lot of data ducks in a row for the most part.  Again, some of this is a numbers game with using the brains of many to see what fits and sticks and there have been some good things happening for sure.  it does take time and a lot of failed projects to get there but we live in world that is moving so quickly that impatience adds yet another element to the puzzle.  We hear about all the new “data” being available for developers and key question here might be “where’s the context” and value?

From the other side of the coin too people in IT still need to earn a living and pay bills so again how long will this continue with getting free or inexpensive developers to continuously work on such projects?  Sometimes what ends up happening is that you have developers with full time jobs who work on projects n the side, and then there’s the “Cash for Code” corporate model that pays a bit of money but in essence doesn’t do much for the innovation job market either and insurers and corporations benefit with buying “cheap code”.

Verizon Latest to Enter “Code for Cash” Prize Format With $1 Million Top Pay Out for Writing Healthcare Apps That Use Their Platform, Is This the New “Corporate Business Model” To Yield Inexpensive Code?

So I can see some of the frustration here with the impatience and perhaps expectations desired falling into a time frame that maybe is too rigid. It’s not the data that is exciting, but rather the models that are created that can make it mean something and create some value. Right now the country and maybe the world is off balance with tangibles and intangibles with far too many making a buck off of flipping an analytical algorithm and I think some of this would be beneficial if it were balanced and used with R and D and bringing more tangibles into the US manufacturing world rather than just some more analytical algorithms that get hyped and marketed and basically just move more money from consumers to the 1% side.

There’s a lot of black swans running around out there as well that come out of nowhere, either an actual physical event or some rogue algorithms that nobody planned for that can shake up the economy and world.  Black Swan events are major events that take us by surprise, but afterwards yield clear explanations as to why they happened. Examples include the 9/11 attacks, the rise of the Internet and World War I.BD

“It’s Not the Data, It’s the Models Stupid”-Big Data Helps But It Is Not the Answer

The innovation center charged by the health reform law with finding solutions to the toughest questions in health care — how to reduce costs and change the way health care is delivered — is losing its first leader.

Rick Gilfillan, who has led the Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation since it was established in 2010, plans to leave at the end of June, according to an internal memo obtained by POLITICO.

Gilfillan, who has experience as a family doctor, will pursue “new opportunities,” Tavenner wrote in the memo. Before joining the Obama administration, he was president and CEO of Geisinger Health Plan, where he helped design a bundled payment system.

Komen Foundation Cancels Charity Walks in Seven Cities

Participation has declined by 37% in the last few years and it might be related back to the political issues with cutting off Planned Parenthood and the political bombshell that was a a result.  In addition, the Foundation was also criticized for their legal actions against other charities for the use of the word “cure” before the political issue.  BD

Susan G. Komen Foundation Attacking Other Charities Over Use Of The Word 'Cure'

The organization, which says it is the largest non-government funder of breast cancer research, said it was cutting three-day walks for 2014 in Phoenix, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, San Francisco and Washington. The event will continue in seven other places.

"The difficult decision to exit these markets was not made lightly, as we know this bold and empowering event has touched the lives of thousands of participants like you," the Dallas-based group said in a message on its Facebook page.

Komen's signature event is the Race for the Cure, which includes 5 kilometers and marathon races as well as the walks. The group says the events involve more than 1.7 million participants each year.

Komen will continue to hold walks in Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Michigan, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle and Minneapolis-St. Paul.

So Much Money and Profit in the Data Selling, Epidemic, SAP Now Coming in as a Middleman Broker to Interpret Data & Share Profits With Wireless Carriers- Banks/Companies Making Billions

In another area we have already seen what temptation can do with the availability of data is easy to obtain..IRS anyone?  Ok so now we have some more algorithms added here for additional translations and interpretations.  Would SAP be messing around here if there was not huge hunks of money to be made?  Nope.  Good video at the link below with folks like NASA, Ford and others trying to figure out what to do with their “big data” and how they don’t even know exactly what they are doing, big chance of loss of context here too.

Big Data/Analytics If Used Out of Context and Without True Values Stand To Be A Huge Discriminatory Practice Against Consumers–More Honest Data Scientists Needed to Formulate Accuracy/Value To Keep Algo Duping For Profit Out of the Game

We hear so much about de-identified data and when you have data profiles for sale, what data base does the buyer have to query it with?  You should realize that the data is making more than one trip from A to B.  As B takes the data and queries it with other data bases and sells it to C.  Now C may take this new data base and with what they have purchased and already have in house, they just might be pretty successful at re-identifying the data with a little data scientist or data base tech type work.  It happens a lot.  You just don’t know how many trips around the horn it makes once it leaves Verizon.  That's how this happens, see the link below, how did my data get out there…duh?

Data Floating Around the Web and You Don’t Know How It Got There? Time to License and Excise Tax Data Sellers–Identify “Flawed Data” Epidemic At The Root of the Problem

“But she didn’t know which company had collected and shared the data in the first place, so she didn’t know how to have her entry removed from the original marketing list.

This is why we need to license and excise tax data sellers as we don’t know how many times our data or the profiles made about us are resold.  New tools for matching, anyone want to toss in a FacePrint?  Of course when data is flawed and full of errors, consumers are free labor for banks and companies as we are stuck doing it on our own dime as we get denied something along the line if we don’t.

Licensing and Excise Taxing Data Sellers, Facial Recognition Yet One More Tool Used To Secure & Match Data - The Epidemic, Billions in Profits for Banks and US Corporations Using Killer Algorithms to Further Erode Consumer Privacy

Ok so Verizon has figured out how to make some jillions here and now SAP wants a cut of that to make the jillions even more data rich and “saleable”.  You know I hear all this talk about “brands” anymore and sure that has some significance to banks and companies, but not much for me anymore as so many products and services tend to be copycats of one another, so seen one, seen them all.  Sure there are exceptions but not a lot.   Sure as the article states, Verizon is committed to your privacy and they are, until it’s sold and is gone out the door and then the buyer of the data is in control.  Again, what kind of value will show up here?  Good question as we don’t quite know yet and without context all of this doesn’t matter anyway when folks take analytics out of context as you get junk then.  All this continues as we have some very weak tech areas with government in understanding the roots of how all this happens,  They think they get it but they don’t and follow the Algo Fairies for the most part.

Lack of Modeling and Algorithm Sleuths and Stalkers In Government, Part of Why We See Such “Silly” HHS and Congressional News About Financial Donations And/Or Solicitations…

I have said many times that Walgreens makes close to a billion every year just selling data but the concept of intangible profits and how they work is difficult for most to get their heads around and hopefully the ABC example above might help.  Time to license and tax the data sellers.  When you see all the economic reports on why manufacturing is down, this is a big part of it as it’s easy money for banks and companies.

Some of the new technology would be nice to add to the manufacturing processes and help the US become less dependent on other countries and to stop the epidemic of flipping algorithms for easy money.  Here’s a good one to look at for reselling.  We all know insurers love data and analytics so what are they doing here with the Visa and Master Card data?  Pretty silly answer from Blue Cross saying we are monitoring to see if any of our members are buying larger clothes.  They are business people and take it and query with even more data and do they sell it or use it in house?  Only the shadow may know that one but they are using all kinds of stuff with working with claims today.

Insurance Companies Are Buying Up Consumer Spending Data-Time is Here to License and Tax the Data Sellers-As Insurers Sell Tons of Data, Gets Flawed Data When Data Buyers Uses Out of Context Too

From an investor side too I wonder how many of the companies and some of the mobile apps would fair with solvency if their “data selling” revenue were not there?  Do they in fact create a product and/or service with enough value to stand on their own without selling data?  I think the answers might be a little scary if someone really dug down into this as we have seen recently with Zynga how dependency works…got it?

So I guess our government is majorly bliss or Algo Duped beyond comprehension with models and algorithms that this stuff is going to keep bouncing around hurting consumers are the flaws and errors continue to rise, Attack of the Killer Algorithms.   All the laws I have seen are useless as there’s no path to identify data sellers (which a license would do) nor what they are selling and to who, and guess what, they could be less than honest with all their privacy claims, it happens, called a breach. Below is a great video that talks about models from a former Wall Street Quant, listen to her as she’s been there done that and worked on stuff for Larry Summers but we won’t hold that against her.  Companies are sitting on $1.7 trillion in cash today as reported by Bill Moyer.

Modeling for Inequality With Segmentation, Insurance Industry Uses Backwards Segmentation As Some Models Stand to Threaten Overall Democracy

If you want to really dig in, one more great video about Quants below from Emanuel Derman who was a quant for years with Goldman and now teaches at Columbia.  He wrote a book and is certainly one of the “types” of intelligence that it would really behoove the government to employ, otherwise we are just sunk as corporate models and those from the banks just walk all over the government and us. These are the smart folks that create the models and the math that runs the financial world.  So in the meantime we have corporate USA growing larger and mining data and the small companies and individuals stand little chance sadly as the data is sold and models are created to even query and sell more.  BD

Emanuel Derman - POWs: Physicists on Wall Street

In an earlier report, The Wall Street Journal offered up one potential use scenario: "Retailers worried about 'show rooming'" -- or customers handling products that they'll later buy via the Web -- "can find out what Web sites people visit on their phones when they're in their stores." The Journal said SAP will share profits from the service with the mobile operators that provide data. The paper also reported that SAP hasn't said which mobile operators, specifically, it's working with.

The Journal notes that the growing market for data could inspire companies to collect still more data -- and thus "broaden the range of data about individuals' habits and movements that law enforcement could subpoena." It quotes a privacy specialist at the American Civil Liberties Union: "It's the collection that's the scary part, not the business use."

SAP is also clearly aware of the basic privacy issue. In its release, it makes a point of referring to the data it would gather from wireless operators as "anonymized." It's also clearly aware of the growing practice of selling consumer data -- and of the opportunity such selling presents for a middleman with a product like its Consumer Insight 365. In the release, it quotes a study by Gartner:

The financial demands of storing and managing big data will lead 30 percent of businesses to directly or indirectly monetize their information assets by trading, bartering, or outright selling them by 2016. Many enterprises are starting to appreciate the real market value that their harvested information assets have within their own industries or beyond. However, the lack of expertise in handling big data and developing information products will create an opportunity for the growth of specialist intermediaries, acting as information brokers or resellers.

Lack of Modeling and Algorithm Sleuths and Stalkers In Government, Part of Why We See Such “Silly” HHS and Congressional News About Financial Donations And/Or Solicitations…

This is silly news for sure and again if we had better technologists employed at some government levels, then news like this would cease to become headlines.  I have said it many times here that complex and ambitious models have been used by insurers for years, long before Obamacare was inked and they do it for profit.  You can almost read at least one story a week in major news publications about this topic and they all say the same thing that complexity leads to bigger profits, so if you have missed it, here it is stated once again:)

Wall Street and Other Financial Institutions Spending Big Bucks Teaching New College Graduates How to Use Spreadsheets–Is This An Emergence of “Mini Modelers”Without Borders?

If we had smarter modeling talent that held some of the “for profit” organizations accountable then we wouldn’t have seen this kind of news with “asking” for donations, which is kind of silly anyway as when major insurers are backing out of exchange participation, chances might be slim and none that they want to kick in money unless there might be a serious tax write off available.  This is where things need to go for the future and we have seen it on Wall Street and in healthcare so time to stop taking swords to a battle where the other side is using machines guns for a simple analogy.  We keep doing this over and over and it plays out in the form of big OMG articles in the news.  It’s all about math and the models used to ensure they are not lying and reducing or expanding risk for profits.

Last week I wrote my opinion on the massive “spreadsheet” training on Wall Street, why?  They want mini modelers..it is what it is and they can sell their “machine technology” created models too, so again what is out there on these SaaS models and what are they creating…hmmmm…”looks like a good model, has square root in it, must be good” is what occurs with folks who are not mathematicians.  We have models galore in healthcare and with health insurance and the insurance industry are the kings of the trade in Health Payer IT areas.

These models move and take your money.  Have you been duped lately?  I call it Algo Duping and it occurs all the time with studies and media that we read.  People smarter than me will tell you how this works and there’s one interesting point in the video at the link below that goes back to a US nuclear weapons assessment where the wrong model was used, way back to Reagan and it’s still out there doing damage today.  The video has a lot of healthcare issues as well, and will make you think about what you read out there today.  Scroll down to the footer of this blog for more videos that I added from what I call the real experts with math that tell you exactly how this works in a way the layman can understand.

Context is Everything–More About the Dark Arts of Mathematical Deception–Professor Siefe Lecture Given at Google’s New York Office–Big Healthcare Focus".

So for this HHS story we have what I consider “no context” here, just more silly OMG news and distractions that are not getting us or Congress anywhere.  Lobbyists and other sorts just love it though as it keeps folks distracted from the modeling and subsequent algorithms that run on servers 24/7 that move and take your money, and sell your data for billions in profits.  Feel screwed, well you should as that’s the reality of what goes on behind closed server doors out there.

Even Australian bankers here in this post are telling you that half of all the financial analytical investments in software will be a waste as with spun marketing you can’t always tell the good from the junk.

Half of Analytics Investments By Companies and Banks Will Be a Waste–What Do We Analyze with Big Data and Does It Have Value–Some Algo Fairies Would Do Better at Disneyland…

What do I know though as a former developer when I sad that Health IT would eat up non tech executives…happening though and not just at HHS, add DOJ and SEC to the group, it’s just so very obvious today.  If you happened to catch the Frontline video about “The Untouchables” it was so obvious that the investigative efforts of the DOJ from what was spoken by DOJ Manny resembled “sling shot” type of attacks if you will, very sad from what I heard.

So until we finally come to terms with holding banks and companies responsible for the accuracy and ethics of the tools they use for profits and get below the soap opera surface, all of this will continue and the US will slide down the tubes as the folks at the top have technology, talent and money to keep government bliss with modeling and algorithms under their thumb for a long time, so enjoy more witch hunt stories in the news as that’s what you are going to see until we get some of the right folks in the right places, sad to say.  A clip from the HHS soap follows below along with the Congressional OMG material to suck you in to the inflated importance of this whole topic…sad but this is about the best we can seem to do of late.  If you wait long enough and follow marketing trends, someone will put out a poll for you to vote on this too…lol…it’s just keeps the distractions moving.  Polls are mostly just trying to sell you something be it a product or an idea or political  view and can be powerful in the OMB world:)  BD

"I have made two calls involving funding, to Robert Wood Johnson (Foundation) and H&R Block, neither of whom are under the regulatory authority of our office," she said in testimony before a House of Representatives oversight committee.

Sebelius said she did make phone calls on behalf of the group, Enroll America, to healthcare companies Johnson & Johnson, Ascension Health and Kaiser Permanente, all of which the department regulates, but she did not ask them for financial donations.

She also said she never discussed her actions with the White House but made the calls at the request of Enroll America, a group that represents a range of healthcare businesses and interest groups working to help educate the public about the benefits of the law, officially known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Roseland Hospital in Chicago Slated to Close Due to Debt, Local Communities Lend Support to Keep Open

Desperate hospitals are still among us.  Ok so here’s the blame game, bad management says the government but this is a safety net type of hospital imagethat sees many patients who can’t pay so a lot of charity cases seen here.  Where’s the philanthropy efforts when you need them.  According to this article they are just 2 million in debt and geez I read about hospitals who are much further in debt so the number seems small by comparison.  600 people will lose jobs and patients are being moved to other facilities.  The hospital also claims the state owes them $6 million.  BD

Roseland Community Hospital received notice this week that it must begin moving patients within three days because of its increasing debt, officials said. The hospital reported a $2 million deficit at the end of the 2011 fiscal year.

Hospital officials said they are devastated by the moving notice and said they were expecting the state to repay them what they claim they are owed.

“I’ve seen this hospital do a lot for this community,” hospital employee Paulette Perry said. “I love my job.”
