Personal Health Records Up for Discussion Again Where the Value Lies, Sorting Out Some Steroid Advertising and Potential Data Selling Connected Devices/Vendors For Real Privacy

Here we go with another version of what I said back in April of 2012 but it is true that you could save your own life one day with a PHR.  My PHR is far from being perfect and connected to everything but it has the basic important facts and I have imported a bit from a few other areas. Again, I recommend the “non tethered” PHRs like HealthVault and MyMedicalRecords and NoMoreClipboard Personal Account  for privacy reasons for sure.  There are good systems though in use by companies like Kaiser Permanente though that are great to use since they are all tied together with care, hospitals and insurance and the clinical data is done for you

Systems like those used with Epic records at Kaiser are good and are not like the ones from insurers who are looking for share holder dividends. Kaiser is a non profit so the incentive for extensive 3rd party use to whittle down claims, etc. is not there as they have already modeled a lot of that into their every day business practices in healthcare.  The same can’t be said for other companies as they mine and they mine and they mine…and analyze.  If you look at the want ads insurers of late seem to have close to standing ads for data miners right and left.

Personal Health Records Come In Many Flavors Today and Are Worth Having–Even If It Is Not Complete and Perfect

This article mentions Aetna and their PHR, and if they want to provide you information for your PHR, create a log on and then take the data and run and import it into a non tethered PHR.  There’s no way with all the data mining and strange analytics going on with insurers and no guarantee they will use their data in context, so again if there’s data to be had there, take it and run and other than maybe referencing a payment, leave it alone and don’t add to it. I would do the same with a PHR from Walgreens as an example too, take the data and run.  The company with selling data (not PHR data but prescriptions and purchases) pockets about a billions every year selling data and I’m tired of their stealth advertising as well as what they see as value is a nuisance to me.  Here’s a good example of insurers who are buying Master Card and Visa records to mine the data and see what size clothes you are buying.

Insurance Companies Are Buying Up Consumer Spending Data-Time is Here to License and Tax the Data Sellers-As Insurers Sell Tons of Data, Gets Flawed Data When Data Buyers Uses Out of Context Too

With a non tethered system, you have the control of what get’s shared with who. Some of the data tracking that goes on wants to see if you are buying junk food as another example. Darn it, if I want to occasionally indulge in a Hersey chocolate bar I certainly don’t’ want the “data mining police” at my door or sending me a text message telling me I’m a naughty girl, and with the NSA news we are hearing, we all worry about data being used out of context.  That capability is there when you combine drug store purchases, etc. in the mix.

Health Insurers and Others Trying to Track Junk Food Consumers Purchase–Attack of the Killer Algorithms for Corporate Profits

Nice kudos to Sean Nolan for his comment here at the end of the article as well, acknowledging there’s some bad actors out there and to watch out for them.  You know if you work with computer code and engineer data today, you have tell consumers this, as I do it all the time.  Again a PHR is really a good thing and this blog probably has the most blog post rich number of any site on the web since I have been covering PHRs since they began.  Again the hospital systems and Healthcare companies like Kaiser do a good job with their PHR as it’s clinical data and not payer influenced so for care and privacy that is good and most of them make their information available to put into a non tethered system.

Any more too you have to look at the devices that report data as well if you want privacy and sometimes I wonder about the consumer mobile health imagedevices and their business models, in other words if they didn’t sell data would they be able to stay in business by just selling the device and app?  Check on how those connect to your PHR as well.  I like those that don’t as me thinks they might be around a while longer than the data selling profiteering folks.  One more item to note and a good reason for a non tethered PHR is that you again control where it gets shared and with all the privacy talk today be sure and look here to see this example on how data can and does get re-matched and if that doesn’t scare you away from using a PHR from an insurer, I don’t know what would (grin).

This is a cool device that has the consumer at mind and heart and I hope they make their funding as it would be a cool device to connect to a non tethered PHR if you wanted that option.

One last reminder if you are a Vet or Medicare participant, get your data into your PHR now…it’s free and private.  BD

Medicare.Gov Blue Button Download For Personal Health Record Information for Those Covered by Medicare

Personal health records (PHR) come in many forms and consumers should find a method that works best for them. Wolter, for example, writes down the information she receives when visiting doctors and stores it in a binder. There are also websites that allow patients to input their medical information and access it via the cloud or save it to their computer for easy reference. Tethered PHRs are personal records that are stored at one medical provider, and connected PHRs are those provided by third parties that automatically connect to multiple health-care providers.

Some insurance companies are offering personal health records with their health insurance plans.  According to Dan Greden, head of eHealth and innovation at Aetna (NYSEAET), the insurer is seeing the adoption rate of personal health records grow about 25% each year. He says the tool is its most popular, and automatically populates with information from when a patient uses his or her health insurance.

“A collected PHR may collect data from the laboratory systems, pharmacies, hospitals, doctors, home monitoring devices and personal observations,” says Sean Nolan, distinguished engineer for Microsoft HealthVault.

“I believe that the potential benefits of keeping a PHR far outweigh the privacy risks --- but that doesn’t mean there aren’t bad actors out there,” says Nolan. “As with anything else online, it’s important to pick a service you trust after doing thorough research so you know what you’re getting into.”

NSA Data Mining Opens the Need for Digital Laws That Specifically Outline IT Infrastructures That Are Legal and Those That Are Not, How Much Data Does the Government Buy And From What Private Companies?–Videos

Well I guess a couple years ago when I started the Attack of the Killer Algorithms I might have been a little ahead of my time.  I keep writing about data, the abuse and the error factors and the flaws.  I know, not a topic that in general reading that interests many until a big story like the NSA breaks.  Even the IRS had their issues as they could gain access to information they never had before.  The problem here is once again, the context.

YOU DO HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT PRIVATE COMPANIES ARE CONTRACTED TO THE GOVERNMENT FOR DATA MINING, IT’S NOT ALL INTERNAL TALENT THAT DOES THIS.  Here’s another back link talking about context.

Big Data/Analytics If Used Out of Context and Without True Values Stand To Be A Huge Discriminatory Practice Against Consumers–More Honest Data Scientists Needed to Formulate Accuracy/Value To Keep Algo Duping For Profit Out of the Game Killer Algorithms Part 47

In watching the PBS video you hear from tech experts saying the same thing that has been on this blog for the last few years.  Even a FBI former department head, talks about security and rights.  He hits the nail on the head with data being used in “context”.  He’s not dumb as he knows too well that he falls under all of this as a citizen too.  On that topic I created a collection of videos that helps explain some of this and how the Query Masters are pretty much in control as to how the data is organized and analyzed.  From there, again the FBI saying the same thing about the lack of trained individuals knowing how to use data in the proper context.

We have matters of security and just flat out matters of making money and 60 Minutes when they did their piece on the credit scoring, you have to perk up and listen as they also address the issues of “flawed data” which is on the rise as well.  It was Chapter 54 of the Attack of the Killer Algorithm series.

60 Minutes Confirms the Super Attacks of the Killer Algorithms With Consumer Credit Information With Flawed Data and the Inability to Algorithmically Fix Errors Which Really Makes a Huge Case for Licensing and Taxing All Data Sellers in the US–Chapter 54

Even the CIA states that innocent citizens are going to get tied in with some of the analytics, so again the error factors with such surveillance need to be considered.  The Las Vegas story is interesting as the NSA got it wrong and one question I have is what is to stop private companies from seeing an opportunity to sell this information they collected to make a buck?  That temptation will always be there.  Watch Chapter 5 on how “predictive behavior” analytics failed the NSA and how the analytics were moved from DARPA.  “Data mining is clearly going to be a huge feature for law enforcement…how much security do you want and how many rights do you want…they say…common sense fair balance.”  We already face the untrained people using data in the private sector.

This video about the secret room at AT&T from years back with actual technologists with their findings is also very interesting.

I guess with intelligence as such, this is why we get stuck with department heads that have high levels of digital illiteracy to they can merely repeat what they are told?  I keep saying put smarter folks in key positions would put the US miles ahead and at least we would get something better in the news than merely a magpie type of statement.  When they go off on their own and try to figure some of this out it gets embarrassing as well.  Add to this the rhetoric that goes on in Congress as well.

Nearly Free-Everything Digitally Created Including Money Versus Real World Assets- Imbalance Leading To Our Own Undoing With A Country Full of Leaders Living on Irrational Behavior Instead of Logic-It Bites Back at the NSA

Furthermore, Bloomberg did a good infographic (link below) on how data gets rematched and this goes on all the time and perhaps not in this same methodology, but when money or security are used as the issue at hand, who knows, only the “Query Master” knows for sure.

Re-Identifying Medical Records All Depends on the Query Master and How Much Money Can Be Saved or Made With Adjusting Risk, Up or Down

Again I hope this NSA event really brings home the need to license and excise tax those who do this for profit as again I agree with the FBI that we truly have a lack of people trained in how to use it and thus they can blindly be lead down the wrong path when the opportunity to cash in and make billions in profits is there staring one in the face.  Modeling for profits is what made Wall Street the software companies that control and move money they are today.

Privacy Wanted–So Let’s Require Those Who Sell Web Data to Register and Tax the Transactions and Publicly Disclose Who They Sell To With a Federal Registry

Perhaps the time has finally come to get smart and create laws that spell out the IT infrastructure used to mine and sell data, as when you look at the NSA data mining operation, it was flat out verbiage and the way it was interpreted by lawyers that allowed a lot of this to take place and it happens in private industry as well.

You can visit the Algo Duping Page for more videos that might help you understand a summary of the data mechanics and the people who create and use them to understand a bit more of this and scroll down to the footer and watch the 4 videos I have there.  Numbers don’t lie but people do.  I don’t object to data being used for security if it is done properly, but again when the availability to make a buck or use it out of context against individuals or groups of citizens, we really need to define how data mining and modeling is used today.

Furthermore to get a halfway educated Congress to understand this and have the ability to create meaningful laws instead of drowning themselves in irrational behavior about abortions or some other meaningless topic, restore the Office of Technology Assessment so we can at least get a start with some intelligent lawmaking.  NSA topic again now brings to light the need for specific digital laws when it comes to data mining, no matter who’s doing it.  BD

Nearly Free-Everything Digitally Created Including Money Versus Real World Assets- Imbalance Leading To Our Own Undoing With A Country Full of Leaders Living on Irrational Behavior Instead of Logic-It Bites Back at the NSA

This is a good article and can be read in it’s entirely at the link at the bottom and when you stop and think about what’s being said here, it’s true.  For a few years I have spoken about the imbalance between tangibles and intangibles and the author here just pretty much defines more of what I have said.  We do have bitcoins out there that are intangibles in the fact that it is software, not a piece of currency you can hold in your hand.  It connects it’s value though to real currency.

Back in April of 2012 I wrote about devaluating some algorithms as when you look at what Wall Street touts for investments today, a lot of it is intangible money making algorithms.  What do you get, a piece of an algorithm running on a server?  Actually what you get is betting on that algorithms to function in a fashion that will generate some kind of profit, much of it today based on the epidemic of data selling we have in the US and the world.

“Devaluate the Algorithm” And “Tax the Data Sellers”–A Cure for Both Healthcare and an Economy Based Heavily on Intangibles–We’ve Lost Our Balance

If you look at Walgreens in 2010, they stated their intangible income of selling data was just a bit short of $800 million, so do they make that much a year selling prescriptions?  I would guess this number is up over a billion now. I don’t know but I would put a guess out there that the data revenue couple be toppling the drug side of their business and if not now, soon.

Web algorithms have more value than food, and sadly when I’m hungry I can’t eat an algorithm can I?  So why is it that food and other commodities that we need to live are rated as values much lower than these social algorithms? On the same hand when I’m sick, an algorithm can certainly help diagnose but it’s not going to cure me as I need something tangible, like a drug or device maybe, so again these social algorithms and the madness created by Wall Street with behavioral analytics if off balance.  We need both tangibles and intangibles but if we don’t get smart enough to learn how to use both in harmony we are all going to suffer.

Denying access is the way this works as written in the original article and I couldn’t agree more.  You need a certain digital worth today and access to maintain millionaire or billionaire status for the most part and the 1% have this, we don’t.  If more efforts with writing math models and formulas were directed towards the use in producing tangible products instead of selling data as such high yielding profits we could perhaps move a little closer to balance.  You don’t have access to all the data that is collected  about you at all.  It’s not transparent at all.

Now with the NSA issue of data being collected, the entire issue of the government NOT addressing privacy is coming back to haunt as again the education process has not been there (except for the efforts of this blog and a few others) as well as the intelligence needed in executive cabinets to even think about addressing it.  ILLITS IN THE DIGITAL WORLD…FROM WHAT IS IN THE NEWS…ALL OMG STUFF FOR RATINGS THAT FEED ON IRRATIONAL BEHAVIOR VERSUS LOGIC.

Lack of Modeling and Algorithm Sleuths and Stalkers In Government, Part of Why We See Such “Silly” HHS and Congressional News About Financial Donations And/Or Solicitations…

I guess all the sleuths are working for the NSA that the government employs and again what contracted companies does the NSA use?  We don’t know an Congress is about as useful as a tick on coal diggers ass with their futile explanations.  A long time ago this member of Congress, Newt Gingrich fought hard and heavy with a few others to abandon the “Office of Technology Assessment” and boy does it show today.  Feinstein and the folks in Congress who spoke up basically had nothing of substance to add to the NSA situation.  We all learn more from reading the Guardian.

They just repeat that “this was ok” but in fact what the hell do they know about data mechanics?  Answer, not much more than what they are told or sometimes guess with under-educated and illusional perceptions….the OMG stuff pokes in again.  Congress needs a bigger brain so we can get rid of some of the “Algorithm Fairies” that float around out there.  I pretty much today consider a lot of what I hear from the Hill to be ill fated digital fantasy perceptions as they don’t know and think they are smarter than they are.  I use logic and they don’t I guess is the difference.

Congress Needs a Bigger Brain–Restore the Office of Technology Assessment And Truly Assess What is Useful And Remove The Algo Duping Permeating In Government–Fantasy Perceptions That Are Not Real Can Be A Dangerous Thing

So again with the NSA bomb with data surveillance the US Government gets exactly the feedback that they grow with consumers, adding  no transparency and the inability or desire to properly and logically address privacy in the country while banks and companies thrive on selling every bit of data they can for profit and we lose as there’s no incentive to bring more jobs back to the US with using technology to create tangibles.  I don’t care at this point about the public data being released, it’s fine for journalists but I want data that interests and helps me.

Instead of logic you can certainly look forward to more bliss and non educated focuses while private industry sells you blind too and queries and requires your data, flawed and all for profit.  Here’s a couple examples at the links below. The government seems to have received the scorn they absolutely deserved here with lack of transparency and the lack of addressing a huge emerging economic situation that is out of hand, digitally illits in government are killing us.  Scroll down to the footer of this blog for some great videos that help educate or visit the Algo Duping page with a few more educational videos on how this all works.  It’s all data running on servers 24/7 making life impacting decisions about all of us, behind server doors.

One more note, don’t depend on Richard Cordray, he’s way too far behind the 8 ball and just one more useless attorney trying to do a job where a technologist is needed.  BD

Time Has Come to License and Tax the Data Sellers of the Web, Companies, Banks, Social Networks..Any One Making a Profit-Latest Microsoft/Google Privacy War Helping the Cause –Consumers Deserve to Know What Is Being Sold and To Who in a Searchable Format

We all understand that the cost of everything that can be created digitally is near-zero.This is why music, videos, text-based knowledge and telephone calls (Skype) are now basically free.

Since money is now created digitally, it too is basically free.  We can see how easy it is to digitally create trillions of dollars in this chart of the U.S. monetary base. Roughly $1.2 trillion was created out of thin air essentially overnight back in the good old days of global financial meltdown.

The key feature of digitally creating credit/money is this: it is immeasurably easier to digitally create claims on real-world assets than it is to create real-world assets.  The Fed can digitally print a trillion dollars at no cost, but that doesn't mean the money flows into the real economy.

Since money can be created for free, how does it retain its value? The answer is artificial scarcity. The example of a college diploma is instructive.

So how does the Fed artificially create scarcity-value for its freely created trillions of dollars? It restricts access to all that beautiful free money. Wouldn't it be nice if you and I could reach in and grab a couple of million bucks from the overflowing till?

When debt-serf purchases of assets serve the agenda of the political/financial Elites, for example buying an auto or home, then the free money is doled out to secure the key feature of debt-serfdom--serfs must service all the debt they take on, thereby enriching the financial system that loaned them the money.

IMS Health, Data Mining Company Acquires Yet Another Company

The company has been on a buy spree in the last few months and now one more in the SaaS business.  Four companiesimage have been acquired in the last few months.  It’s an interesting mix to see what they are bringing together with social networking, as their primary focus has been data mining.  Drug companies pay IMS for information about doctor prescribing habits and they appear to be expanding into additional areas as well as analytics with health insurance claims.  BD

Pharma data giant IMS Health has acquired SaaS firm Incential Software, as it looks to extend its performance management capabilities for life sciences organizations worldwide. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lisa KerberFounded in 1998 by software developer Fin Gold, Incential offers cloud-based technology and services that integrate incentive compensation, data management and business intelligence applications. Incential’s solutions will become part of IMS One, the company’s commercial platform that combines IMS Health and third-party data for sales, marketing and performance management activities.

Cook Medical Gets FDA Clearance for Biliary Controlled Release Uncovered Stent for the GI Tract

The device has already been approved in Europe with 1200 in use.  The delivery system with extended precision allows the doctor to recapture the stent or put it in place with the trigger handle.  BD

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Food and Drug Administration has granted 510(k) clearance for the Evolution® Biliary Controlled-Release Uncovered Stent from Cook Medical. The biliary stent adds to Cook’s line of Evolution controlled-release stents for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is the only delivery system that allows the stent to be deployed or recaptured as needed, putting control in the physician’s hands. image

Approximately 35,500 metal biliary stents are placed each year1 to relieve symptoms associated with obstruction of the bile duct. The woven construction of the Evolution biliary stent is designed to maintain patency and specifically to aid in preventing stent migration after placement.

Cook’s family of Evolution stents has a delivery system that allows a physician to deploy or recapture the stent in equal increments by squeezing the trigger on the handle. A “point of no return” mark alerts the physician when the stent is deployed too far to be recaptured. The system also features Cook’s patent pending Flexor Plus™ technology and remains flexible yet firm enough to be navigated through difficult paths in the anatomy.

Arizona Governor Make Campaign to Expand Medicaid in Arizona–Someone Went to Math and Ethics School, More Could Follow

Well, if you read the link below and remember the people who died not being able to get transplants in Arizona due to no money in the budget, well that kind of says it all.  Looking at the reality versus a GOP OMG Soap opera is much more music to the ears for sure as last week even some members of Congress were even talking about eliminating food stamps.

Phoenix Man Denied a Liver Transplant Due to Arizona Budget Cuts-Patient Who Had Insurance Coverage Received the Organ

It is time to come to grips and see the world and country as it is today and realize that technology has taken jobs, other jobs pay less, people are working harder for less.  The rich folks at the top just can’t see this but if you look around in any city there are hints everywhere.  After a while it just doesn’t feel good to keep depriving those who have been caught with less due to ban bank behaviors and hopefully others might develop the same focus.  BD

Arizona: Second Denied Transplant Patient Dies Due to Budget Cuts-The Real Death Panels Reside with Governor Brewer

We were all so adamant that we didn’t like Obamacare. We fought tooth and nail. But there comes a time, and you have to look at the reality. You have to do the math,” Brewer told POLITICO in a phone interview. “I did not make this decision lightly. … It’s not only a mathematical issue, but it’s a moral issue.”

Brewer, in contrast, has made a campaign-style push. She has held rallies with advocates who typically battle Republicans, given speeches, aired commercials and traveled the state pushing the message. Her spokesman, Matthew Benson, said an outside coalition, including the state hospital association, has helped raise $1 million for the effort with Brewer’s encouragement

Advocates for Obamacare see Brewer’s support as pragmatic, a choice they say any governor would make if politics were taken out of the equation. Brewer’s office estimates that accepting expansion will restore coverage for 240,000 people frozen out of Medicaid for lack of funds in 2011 and extend coverage to 57,000 more.
