NSA Data Mining Opens the Need for Digital Laws That Specifically Outline IT Infrastructures That Are Legal and Those That Are Not, How Much Data Does the Government Buy And From What Private Companies?–Videos

Well I guess a couple years ago when I started the Attack of the Killer Algorithms I might have been a little ahead of my time.  I keep writing about data, the abuse and the error factors and the flaws.  I know, not a topic that in general reading that interests many until a big story like the NSA breaks.  Even the IRS had their issues as they could gain access to information they never had before.  The problem here is once again, the context.

YOU DO HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT PRIVATE COMPANIES ARE CONTRACTED TO THE GOVERNMENT FOR DATA MINING, IT’S NOT ALL INTERNAL TALENT THAT DOES THIS.  Here’s another back link talking about context.

Big Data/Analytics If Used Out of Context and Without True Values Stand To Be A Huge Discriminatory Practice Against Consumers–More Honest Data Scientists Needed to Formulate Accuracy/Value To Keep Algo Duping For Profit Out of the Game Killer Algorithms Part 47

In watching the PBS video you hear from tech experts saying the same thing that has been on this blog for the last few years.  Even a FBI former department head, talks about security and rights.  He hits the nail on the head with data being used in “context”.  He’s not dumb as he knows too well that he falls under all of this as a citizen too.  On that topic I created a collection of videos that helps explain some of this and how the Query Masters are pretty much in control as to how the data is organized and analyzed.  From there, again the FBI saying the same thing about the lack of trained individuals knowing how to use data in the proper context.

We have matters of security and just flat out matters of making money and 60 Minutes when they did their piece on the credit scoring, you have to perk up and listen as they also address the issues of “flawed data” which is on the rise as well.  It was Chapter 54 of the Attack of the Killer Algorithm series.

60 Minutes Confirms the Super Attacks of the Killer Algorithms With Consumer Credit Information With Flawed Data and the Inability to Algorithmically Fix Errors Which Really Makes a Huge Case for Licensing and Taxing All Data Sellers in the US–Chapter 54

Even the CIA states that innocent citizens are going to get tied in with some of the analytics, so again the error factors with such surveillance need to be considered.  The Las Vegas story is interesting as the NSA got it wrong and one question I have is what is to stop private companies from seeing an opportunity to sell this information they collected to make a buck?  That temptation will always be there.  Watch Chapter 5 on how “predictive behavior” analytics failed the NSA and how the analytics were moved from DARPA.  “Data mining is clearly going to be a huge feature for law enforcement…how much security do you want and how many rights do you want…they say…common sense fair balance.”  We already face the untrained people using data in the private sector.

This video about the secret room at AT&T from years back with actual technologists with their findings is also very interesting.

I guess with intelligence as such, this is why we get stuck with department heads that have high levels of digital illiteracy to they can merely repeat what they are told?  I keep saying put smarter folks in key positions would put the US miles ahead and at least we would get something better in the news than merely a magpie type of statement.  When they go off on their own and try to figure some of this out it gets embarrassing as well.  Add to this the rhetoric that goes on in Congress as well.

Nearly Free-Everything Digitally Created Including Money Versus Real World Assets- Imbalance Leading To Our Own Undoing With A Country Full of Leaders Living on Irrational Behavior Instead of Logic-It Bites Back at the NSA

Furthermore, Bloomberg did a good infographic (link below) on how data gets rematched and this goes on all the time and perhaps not in this same methodology, but when money or security are used as the issue at hand, who knows, only the “Query Master” knows for sure.

Re-Identifying Medical Records All Depends on the Query Master and How Much Money Can Be Saved or Made With Adjusting Risk, Up or Down

Again I hope this NSA event really brings home the need to license and excise tax those who do this for profit as again I agree with the FBI that we truly have a lack of people trained in how to use it and thus they can blindly be lead down the wrong path when the opportunity to cash in and make billions in profits is there staring one in the face.  Modeling for profits is what made Wall Street the software companies that control and move money they are today.

Privacy Wanted–So Let’s Require Those Who Sell Web Data to Register and Tax the Transactions and Publicly Disclose Who They Sell To With a Federal Registry

Perhaps the time has finally come to get smart and create laws that spell out the IT infrastructure used to mine and sell data, as when you look at the NSA data mining operation, it was flat out verbiage and the way it was interpreted by lawyers that allowed a lot of this to take place and it happens in private industry as well.

Big Data, Flawed Data, Business Intelligence, Where’s The Future and What Has Been Our Past…A World With ”Algo Duping” of Society and Consumers

You can visit the Algo Duping Page for more videos that might help you understand a summary of the data mechanics and the people who create and use them to understand a bit more of this and scroll down to the footer and watch the 4 videos I have there.  Numbers don’t lie but people do.  I don’t object to data being used for security if it is done properly, but again when the availability to make a buck or use it out of context against individuals or groups of citizens, we really need to define how data mining and modeling is used today.

Furthermore to get a halfway educated Congress to understand this and have the ability to create meaningful laws instead of drowning themselves in irrational behavior about abortions or some other meaningless topic, restore the Office of Technology Assessment so we can at least get a start with some intelligent lawmaking.  NSA topic again now brings to light the need for specific digital laws when it comes to data mining, no matter who’s doing it.  BD
